WHAT
IS HIGH PERFORMANCE SPORTS MENTAL SKILLS
COACHING?
For over 25 years, the
Behavioral Coaching Institute has
been providing our select students with world-best skills, knowledge and
scientifically proven tools to position themselves at the
top of the coaching field.
Neuroscience provide us a clear map to fast-tracked,
sustainable individual and team development.
The exciting new field of
Neuroscience provides us an understanding of the underlying
mechanisms of mental skills coaching and important insights how
to fast-track development.
These important insights provide
sports coaches a blue-print for scientific coaching processes that
are incredibly easy to use and generate exceptional,
sustainable results.
The course reviews critical findings and latest studies that
provides students the neural differences between the modern
approach to sports coaching and yesterday’s sports coaching model.
Neuro-Behavioral Coaching activates networks and regions of the brain
that are associated with big-picture thinking, engagement,
motivation, stress regulation, and parasympathetic
modulation. Whereas the brain areas responsible for
analytic thinking, used in the traditional coaching
approach, exist in tension with the brain regions essential
for emotionally connecting with self, others and being open
to challenge and development.
Many recent studies confirm the “Secret
Ingredient” to Athletic Performance..
Professional athletes at the highest levels of
competition use the course's daily mental
exercises, including a major US league baseball
team—one that recently won the World Series. There
are PGA golfers using the techniques to cut strokes
off their game, to calm their nerves and steady
their hands and NFL players who use them to get back
on the field after injury faster than the
competition.
The Institute's unique, Mental Skills
Coaching
Course provides select
student's powerful, 15 minute,
personalized, daily mental exercises that are worth millions of
dollars to elite professional athletes, not to mention massive
recognition and prestige.
Coaches sign confidentiality agreements with their
athletes not to disclose the work they are engaged in
together. However, there are numerous, research studies
published in leading scientific journals (cited in our
unique course) confirming the significant, sustainable results
generated by the techniques presented in our unique course

High Performance Coaching Reports
The
Behavioral Coaching
Institute pioneered behavioral coaching and performance
coaching over 30 years ago and today is still the world’s
leading developer and supplier of cutting edge performance coaching
methodology.
In line with today’s new challenges and opportunities, we provide
unique, world-best-class, coach training courses with a high
performance neuro-behavioral coaching focus for individual and team
development.
The Sports Behavioral
Sciences have been significantly updated by powerful, life-changing
contributions from brain-mind-body medicine, emerging
neuroscientific technologies and the latest, evidence-based
methodologies from Applied Cognitive Neuroscience and
Neuropsychology.
Peak performance coaching tools and techniques.
To create lasting, significant performance
enhancement
it is necessary to understand the positive and negative
influence that an athlete's Mental Skills has on
the execution of their Technical Sports / Physical Skills. Only when we fully
understand a person's behavioral patterns and create positive
self-managing coaching strategies can we assist a person to
create lasting, power-boosting, performance change.
High
Performance Neuro-Behavioral Coaching should not be confused with
other types of coaching or sports psychology which uses a
counselling approach.
High Performance Neuro-Behavioral Coaching is a form of Directive Coaching. Broadly speaking, coaching
methodologies are either directive or non-directive in approach. Directive
Coaching involves:
telling, instructing, offering guidance, giving
feedback, making suggestions etc. Non-Directive Coaching involves
helping someone to solve their own problems and given them the responsibility for
taking action.
Performance Coaching methods have changed little in 10
years, perhaps even 20 years.
The traditional, passive sports
"coach" doesn't have time nor the techniques to help an
athlete understand why they may be using an unhelpful mental
framework or 'underperforming behavior'.
When sports coaches / trainers access knowledge from outdated, traditional coach-education
manuals, the results are greater myths and confusion rather
than improved clarity of knowledge.
Coaches need to understand the value in staying ahead of the
rapidly evolving process of sports performance coaching.
Team and individual performance
results will remain disordered and inconsistent unless a standardized,
modern
coaching approach and the same scientific, coaching methodologies are adopted by
all trainers / coaches with their athletes. It is imperative that
up-to-date, coaching
best-practices and evidence-based principles are introduced to the
coach's knowledge base. A failure to keep abreast of an ever expanding
knowledge base of today's high performance neuro-behavioral coaching best-practices will
stymie progress in personal achievements and performance outcomes.
Specialist Mental Skills Coaches
primarily source their knowledge and
skill sets from today’s cutting-edge, neuroscientific technologies and the
latest, evidence-based methodologies
from Applied Cognitive Neuroscience.
Specialist Mental Skills Coaches:
- take a teaching, 'directive coaching' approach with their coaches
- focus on the now and future time space in achieving their
athlete's Performance Needs Coals
- employ today’s advanced, science-based, mental skills techniques
- use accelerated learning (typically 2 or 3 brief sessions only) to
empower athletes to self-coach themselves and practice their
customized mental exercises.
- also refer any athletes with psychological problems to a licensed
psychologist.
The Bottom Line
Today’s, huge window of opportunity for sports mental skills
coaching is tailored made for certified coaches trained in the use
of proven, cutting-edge, sports science methodology delivered via
easy-to-use, short, daily, mental exercises.

TYPICAL ATHLETE'S STEPS
WHEN WORKING WITH A SPORTS PERFORMANCE PSYCHOLOGY COACH
The coach (typically via telecoaching) will discuss the athletes sports
Performance Needs and then develop a personalized plan for them. It will
consist of different goals they wish to achieve in their sports
performance.
Overcoming Sporting
Challenges
The coach will conduct performance profiling which consists of
evaluating the athletes existing mental skills and improving them
further to reach the next level in their Sports Performance
Sporting Challenges are part of every athlete’s career. The coach
will support the athlete to overcome their challenges using
cutting-edge, neuro-behavioral methodology and tools to build stronger
mental skills.
Together they will work
on developing new mental skills using easy-to-learn and use, short,
daily exercises they can practice anytime. The coach will monitor
the athletes mental skills exercises and help them practice when
required.
The coach will support the
athlete throughout the designated learning and development journey. The
athlete will notice how their mental skills will quickly transfer into
their game. Their new skills will become a part of their 'New improved
SELF'
Some Definitions:Performance can be seen as the Actual Results
vs Desired Results. Any discrepancy, where Actual is less than
Desired, could constitute the performance improvement zone.
Performance planning occurs when goals and objectives
are established.
Performance coaching occurs when a coach (using the directive
coaching)
intervenes and provides feedback for the purpose of
improving performance (see below for further details)
Performance measurement standards are
communicated to athletes with expectations for their
position/sport.
Performance measurement is the process of
assessing progress toward achieving predetermined goals, while
performance management is building on that
process adding the relevant communication and action on the
progress achieved against these predetermined goals. To
provide this direction, coachees communicate
to athletes what is expected of them, define satisfactory
performance for those expectations, and then monitor and
evaluate the performance on an on going basis.
Performance Management is an ongoing dialogue between
the coach and
athletes that links expectations, ongoing
feedback and coaching, performance evaluations, development planning,
and follow-up. Performance management should be both Strategic (about
broader issues and longer-term goals) and Integrated (linking
various aspects of the
individuals, teams and goals/strategic objectives). It should provide the means to link individual
and team performance with a team's mission.
Performance Coaching Feedback is a process by which
the coach provides effective and constructive feedback on the
athlete's performance of learned skills. Effective performance is
reinforced and less-than-desirable performance is worked on to
improve. Feedback should be information that highlights strengths,
positive behavior and a means for skills critiquing, encouragement of new
learning and the explanation of the relationship
between what is expected and what has been accomplished after the
athlete's efforts are executed. Feedback can take many forms;
it can be informal or formal.
Performance Evaluations provide a comparison of
actual task performance to established performance
measurement standards. As a best practice, the coach and
athlete regularly discuss expectations,
performance standards and objectives, set expectations,
gather data, and provide on going feedback to athletes to
assist them in utilizing their mental and physical skills, expertise and
strategies to
produce enhanced results. To provide this direction, data is
gathered to provide ongoing feedback to athletes
regarding their performance.
Performance appraisal occurs when individual
performance is formally documented and feedback is delivered.
Performance improvement is any effort targeted at
closing the gap between Actual Results and Desired Results.
